The activity has different variations, each one with its own unique features. One of the main variations is the Alpine, which is when things do downhill, literally. This is a very common variant and it normally takes place at resorts. As the name suggests, it originated in the European Alps. Within this variant are several sub genres.
The examples are freestyle, heliskiing and competitive classes. Within these classes are super G, slalom, Giant slalom, disabled and downhill. It is dangerous enough that two to four skiers are bound to get injured out of a thousand. Knee injuries are common amongst the participants.
Then there is the Nordic type. It is the older of the two forms and Scandinavia was the place where it was developed. It was intended to be an alternative method of traveling through the snow. Free heel bindings are used, and attached to the boots at the toes, not the heel.
